Jackass Library Scofflaw Selling Materials Online

Thomas Pilaar gets my vote for jackass of the year. He was nabbed for selling materials checked out from local libraries online. Libraries are one of the most sacred of public institutions as far as I’m concerned. It’s estimated that he took more than 40k worth of materials from the Denver area libraries.

What is a religion that requires faith? It’s a sad, pallid thing. The world brimming with magic asks not for faith but for imaginative observation. Come to Mono Lake for the gathering.

Crow’s Fall

When Crow was white he decided the sun was too white.
He decided it glared much too whitely.
He decided to attack it and defeat it.

He got his strength up flush and in full glitter.
He clawed and fluffed his rage up.
He aimed his beak direct at the sun’s centre.

He laughed himself to the centre of himself

And attacked.

At his battle cry trees grew suddenly old,
Shadows flattened.

But the sun brightened—
It brightened, and Crow returned charred black.

He opened his mouth but what came out was charred black.

“Up there,” he managed,
“Where white is black and black is white, I won.”

Red Sunset a Harbinger of Doom?

RED SKY IN MORNING, SAILORS WARNING; RED SKY AT NIGHT, SAILORS DELIGHT. This saying only applies to mid-latitude locations (winds are easterly in the tropics / in the high latitudes the sun rises and sets at a large deviation from the east-west trajectory). Storm systems in the middle latitudes generally move west to east. A red sky in the morning implies the rising sun in the east is shining on clouds to the west and conditions are clear to the east. Clouds moving from the west (especially upper level cirrus) indicate an approaching storm system. A red sky at night implies the sun (setting in the west) is shining on clouds to the east and conditions are clear to the west (because the sun can be seen setting).

The setting sun cast a glow last night as scarlet as cherry wine. Rising in the East the waning moon was barley a sliver. The red room quivered with anticipation…. Habit Rouge was the scent of the evening. Yes, the red habit. The killer’s addiction. Report, my minions, from hell.

The Magician

The magician is weary. Long nights of incantations, the incense smoke swirling, candles gutter as the spirit appears. It’s manifestation the coming of a new era. Don’t be afraid. This spirit can adopt any form. Any form you find pleasing. You will never suspect…

Scorpius and the Azure Dragon

Look at the star chart. Due south lies Scorpius, the scorpion, one of the oldest constellations in the sky. It sits on the ecliptic, the celestial pathway of the sun over the course of a year. These ecliptic constellations, sometimes called the Zodiac, are used by astrologers (not astronomers!) to determine your horoscope sign. Your sign is the constellation the sun is in at the moment of your birth.

The Scorpion, according to Greek mythology, was sent by Apollo to attack the mighty hunter Orion. Apollo was jealous of the attention that Artemis showed to Orion. In a great battle, the Scorpion killed Orion, but Apollo felt shamed for his actions and helped Artemis hang Orion’s body prominently in the night sky.

The Scorpion was also placed in the sky, opposite Orion. As Scorpius rises in the east, Orion sets in the west. This arrangement prevented a continuation of the battle among the stars.

For Chinese skywatchers, the stars of Scorpius were part of a larger pattern called the Azure Dragon of the East. It represents spring and includes parts of the constellations Western skywatchers call Sagittarius, Libra and Virgo. The Azure Dragon is the heavenly home of the Blue Emperor.

At the heart of the constellation Scorpius lies the class M red supergiant Antares. In astrology it is regarded as a royal star, indicating great honors to one who has it emphasized in the chart. It also indicates legal trouble and more than one marriage. It has some of the characteristics of Scorpio like stubborness, suspicion and violence. Today, Scorpio, look for opportunities, but also be on guard against the jealous heart.
